About Claudell Washington

Washington started the 1975 opener in left field at 20 years and 220 days old, the youngest Athletics player to start on Opening Day. He led the club with a .308 average and 40 stolen bases, second in the American League, and went 1-for-1 with a single and a steal in the All-Star Game. His 1976 Topps cards are #189 with the Athletics and #198, the American League stolen base leaders card, shared with Mickey Rivers of the Angels and Amos Otis of the Royals.

Claudell Washington was a left-handed outfielder who paired speed with occasional power over 17 major league seasons, from 1974 to 1990, with the Athletics, Rangers, White Sox, Mets, Braves, Yankees and Angels. Raised in Berkeley, he signed with Oakland as an undrafted free agent in 1972 for $3,000, debuted on July 5, 1974, and went 4-for-7 in the World Series as the Athletics won their third straight title. A two-time All-Star, he reached the postseason with Oakland in 1974 and 1975 and with Atlanta in 1982. On June 22, 1980, he hit three home runs for the Mets, his second three-homer game, and became the third player after Babe Ruth and Johnny Mize to do it in both leagues. He was NL Player of the Month for September 1982 and hit the Yankees' 10,000th franchise home run in April 1988. Nolan Ryan struck him out 39 times, more than any other batter. His father called him Champ, and his teammates called him SuperWash. Footage of him batting for Atlanta on June 5, 1985, appears in the 1986 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. His career line was .278 with 164 home runs and 824 RBI. He stole 312 bases and died on June 10, 2020.
