The story on this card
The 1975 American League wins race is the subject of 1976 Topps #200, part of the League Leaders run at #191-205. Catfish Hunter, printed as Jim Hunter with the New York Yankees, and Jim Palmer of the Baltimore Orioles each won 23 games. Hunter went 23-14 in the first year of his Yankee contract, and Palmer went 23-11 with a league-best 2.09 ERA. Vida Blue of the Oakland Athletics was third at 22-11. Hunter also led the league with 328 innings and 30 complete games, and finished behind Palmer in the Cy Young voting.
Catfish Hunter won 224 games and five World Series championships with the Athletics and Yankees. The 1974 American League Cy Young winner became a free agent after a contract dispute and entered the Hall of Fame in 1987. Jim Palmer was Baltimore's ace right-hander, a three-time Cy Young winner and four-time Gold Glover who worked on three World Series champions, beat Sandy Koufax in Koufax's final appearance, and reached the Hall of Fame in 1990. Vida Blue was a hard-throwing left-hander who won the 1971 American League Cy Young Award and MVP Award with Oakland, pitched for three straight World Series winners from 1972 to 1974, and finished 209-161 with the Athletics, Giants and Royals.
