About George Medich

On card #146 Medich is a Yankee, coming off a 1975 of 16-16 with a 3.50 ERA in 272 1/3 innings. He had opened that season on April 8 in Cleveland and lost 5-3 in Frank Robinson's debut as manager. On December 11, 1975 the Yankees sent him to Pittsburgh for Willie Randolph, Dock Ellis and Ken Brett, so the pinstripes pictured were already behind him.

Doc Medich was a 6-foot-5 right-handed starter who pitched eleven big-league seasons, 1972 through 1982, for the Yankees, Pirates, Athletics, Mariners, Mets, Rangers and Brewers, finishing 124-105 with a 3.77 ERA and 16 shutouts. He was also a physician: an Aliquippa, Pennsylvania native who played tight end at the University of Pittsburgh, he entered its medical school in 1970 and earned his MD in 1977, working out an arrangement with the Yankees that let him pitch while he studied. The Doc nickname followed him from his first Yankees camp. He was the last Yankee winning pitcher at the original Yankee Stadium, a shutout of Detroit on September 29, 1973. His one postseason appearance came for Milwaukee, two innings in Game 6 of the 1982 World Series. His 1981 season in Texas, 10-6 with a 3.08 ERA, tied for the American League lead in shutouts.
