About Graig Nettles

Graig Nettles is #169 in the 1976 Topps set, one of the regular-issue cards whose front carries the All-Star designation. It reflects 1975, when he started at third base for the American League in the All-Star Game and led the league with 11 sacrifice flies. He also hit .267 with 21 home runs and 91 RBI. On May 20, 1976, Nettles was on second base when a brawl with Boston began and tackled pitcher Bill Lee from behind.

Graig Nettles was a third baseman who played 22 major league seasons for the Twins, Indians, Yankees, Padres, Braves and Expos. He attended San Diego State on a basketball scholarship and played both basketball and baseball before Minnesota drafted him in the fourth round in 1965. He debuted in September 1967. Nettles won Gold Gloves in 1977 and 1978 and made six All-Star teams. His 37 home runs and 107 RBI in 1977 were career highs, and he played for the Yankees' World Series champions that year and in 1978. He was named ALCS MVP in 1981. He finished with a .248 average, 390 home runs and 1,314 RBI, setting the American League career home run record for third basemen. San Diego's Breitbard Hall of Fame inducted him in 1991.
