1976 Topps #319 Larry Gura

About Larry Gura
Gura appears as a Yankee on card #319, backed by a 7-8, 3.51 ERA season in 1975. By 1976 he was with Kansas City. Sports Illustrated writer Bill Nack documented his offseason regime of weightlifting, squats, bends and jumping jacks, plus a blender breakfast of three raw eggs, two tablespoons of honey, protein powder and whole milk. A broadcaster later called him a pioneer in nutrition and weight training.
Larry Gura was a left-handed pitcher from Joliet, Illinois, who worked 16 major league seasons for the Chicago Cubs (1970-73 and 1985), New York Yankees (1974-75) and Kansas City Royals (1976-85). At Arizona State he won national championships and went 19-2 in 1969, the winningest season by a pitcher in college history, and the Cubs drafted him in the second round that June. He finished 126-97 with a 3.76 ERA, 16 shutouts and 14 saves. With Kansas City he won in double figures seven straight years from 1978 to 1984, 99 victories in all, and went 11-6 against his former Yankees in the regular season. His best year was 1980, when he was 18-10 with a 2.95 ERA, made the American League All-Star team and started Games 2 and 5 of the World Series. The Royals named him their pitcher of the year twice. Joliet inducted him into its inaugural hall of fame.
