About Rick Dempsey

Card #272 lists Dempsey with the Yankees, the team he left on June 15, 1976. He went to Baltimore with Scott McGregor, Tippy Martinez, Rudy May and Dave Pagan in a trade that sent Ken Holtzman and Doyle Alexander to New York. Dempsey hit .194 in 80 games across the two clubs, 67 of them behind the plate.

Rick Dempsey caught in the major leagues for 24 seasons, from a 1969 debut with the Minnesota Twins to a final game with the Baltimore Orioles in 1992. He was a defensive catcher, valued for handling pitchers, a strong arm and agility behind the plate, and he finished with a .233 average, 96 home runs and 1,093 hits. The Orioles used him as their starting catcher for ten and a half seasons after a June 1976 trade, and no one caught more games for the club. He batted .385 in the 1983 World Series and was named its Most Valuable Player, and he was a Dodgers backup on another World Series winner in 1988. His rain-delay pantomimes, ending in a belly slide on the tarpaulin, were a Baltimore trademark. The Orioles inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1997. He later managed in the minors and coached and broadcast for the Orioles.
