The story on this card

National League earned run average for 1975 fills 1976 Topps #201, inside the League Leaders subset. Randy Jones of the San Diego Padres took the title at 2.24 over 285 innings. His 20-12 record came a year after an 8-22 season. Andy Messersmith of the Los Angeles Dodgers was second at 2.29 across 321 2/3 innings, pitched while he played out his contract unsigned. Tom Seaver of the New York Mets was third at 2.38 and won the Cy Young Award with a 22-9 record. Jones finished second in that voting and won the award himself in 1976.

Sinkerball left-hander Randy Jones won the 1976 NL Cy Young Award for the Padres after a 20-win 1975. A nerve injury ended his peak, and he finished 100-123 with a 3.42 ERA, a Padres Hall of Famer. Andy Messersmith made four All-Star teams and won two Gold Gloves during a 12-season pitching career. His successful 1975 arbitration case with Dave McNally ended clubs' claims to unlimited annual contract renewals. Tom Seaver won 311 games and three National League Cy Young Awards across 20 seasons. The Mets' right-hander helped win the 1969 World Series and entered the Hall of Fame in 1992.
