The left-hander reached 71 appearances and 27 saves for Washington in 1970. With Oakland he became the first pitcher to appear in all seven games of a World Series, saving Games 1 and 7 against the Mets in 1973. He finished that Series with 6 1/3 innings and no earned runs, retiring Wayne Garrett for the final out. After his playing career, Knowles coached pitchers in the Cardinals, Phillies, Pirates and Blue Jays organizations, including eight years as a roving instructor for St. Louis.
