1976 Topps #618 Jack Brohamer

About Jack Brohamer
Topps pictured him with Cleveland on #618, the club he had played for through 1975. On May 25 of that season he bruised his left hip trying to break up a double play against Oakland, and an infection in the joint kept him out of the lineup for almost two months. With Chicago in 1976 he hit .251 and set career highs of 7 home runs and 40 RBI, playing alongside shortstop Bucky Dent.
Jack Brohamer was a left-handed-hitting second baseman, with time at third, who played nine seasons from 1972 to 1980 for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox. Cleveland drafted him in the 34th round in 1967 and he singled in his first big-league at-bat on April 18, 1972. Compared to Eddie Stanky for his short, stocky build and reckless style of play, he was called Scrappy Jack, and The Hammer as a shortening of his surname. Cleveland traded him to the White Sox for Larvell Blanks on December 12, 1975. In Chicago he became the only major leaguer to homer in uniform shorts, on August 21, 1976, during a Bill Veeck promotion. He signed with Boston as a free agent, returned to Cleveland in a June 1980 purchase and finished there. He batted .245 with 30 home runs in 805 games, then became a detective sergeant with the Oceanside, California, police department.
