1976 Topps #185 Dave Parker

About Dave Parker
Danny Murtaugh lifted the platoon in 1975, and Parker answered with 25 home runs, 101 RBIs and the National League's top slugging percentage. The Sporting News put him in its postseason all-star outfield. In 1976 he batted .313 and stole 19 bases, and he hit better against left-handers than against right-handers, the pitchers he had once been limited to. His 1976 Topps card is #185. After that season he signed a three-year contract rising from $175,000 to $225,000, a deal he soon regretted as other players signed bigger ones.
Dave Parker was a 6-foot-5 left-handed-hitting right fielder who played 19 major league seasons, 1973 to 1991, and spent his prime in Pittsburgh as Roberto Clemente's successor in right field. He won National League batting titles in 1977 and 1978, was the 1978 Most Valuable Player, took three straight Gold Gloves from 1977 to 1979 and made seven All-Star teams. He grew up in Cincinnati near Crosley Field, and the Pirates drafted him in the 14th round in 1970. After the 1983 season he signed with his hometown Reds as a free agent, led the league with 125 RBIs in 1985, finished second to Willie McGee in that year's MVP voting and won the first Home Run Derby at the 1985 All-Star Game. Cincinnati traded him to Oakland for Jose Rijo and Tim Birtsas in December 1987, and he won World Series rings with the 1979 Pirates and the 1989 Athletics before finishing with Milwaukee, California and Toronto. He retired with 2,712 hits, 339 home runs and a .290 average. He testified at the 1985 Pittsburgh drug trials and drew a suspension that was later commuted. The Classic Baseball Era Committee elected him to the Hall of Fame in December 2024 with 87.5 percent of the vote. He died on June 28, 2025, before the July induction ceremony.
