1976 Topps #184 Bill Greif

About Bill Greif
Card #184 pictures him with the Padres, the club he left on May 19, 1976, when San Diego sent him to St. Louis for Luis Melendez after five starts. In 1975 he had been moved to the bullpen full time, appearing in 59 games with a 3.88 ERA. The Cardinals kept him in relief, and his 1976 totals across both clubs were 2-8 with a 5.26 ERA in 52 games.
Bill Greif was a 6 ft 4 in right-hander from Texas who pitched in the majors from 1971 to 1976 for the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals. A third-round pick of the Astros in 1968 out of John H. Reagan High School in Austin, he had signed to play football at the University of Texas before baseball won out. Houston traded him to the Padres in December 1971, and nearly all of his work came in San Diego, mostly as a starter from 1972 through 1974. His best year was 1973, a 3.21 ERA over 199 1/3 innings with nine complete games and three shutouts. He leaned on a hard-thrown knuckle-curve, a knuckleball with the spin removed that he threw at close to fastball speed. He moved to the bullpen in 1975, saved nine games, and was sent to St. Louis in May 1976. His career line was 31-67 with a 4.41 ERA and 19 saves. He finished in the Mets organization with three games for Tidewater in 1978.
