1976 Topps #44 Doug Rader

About Doug Rader
Doug Rader's 1975 season slipped to .223 with 12 home runs and 48 RBI, and his run of five straight Gold Gloves ended when Ken Reitz of the Cardinals won it. His 1976 Topps card, #44, carries the Astros. Houston traded him to San Diego for Larry Hardy and Joe McIntosh on December 11, 1975. In 1976 he hit .257 with nine homers and 55 RBI for the Padres.
Doug Rader was a third baseman who built his reputation on defense. Signed by the Houston Astros as an undrafted free agent out of Bloomington, Illinois, he reached the majors in 1967 and became Houston's everyday third baseman the following year. Over an eleven-year career split between the Astros, San Diego Padres, and Toronto Blue Jays, he hit 155 home runs and drove in 722 runs. He won five consecutive Gold Glove Awards at third base from 1970 through 1974. Nicknamed "the Red Rooster" for the thick red hair under his cap, he later moved into coaching and managing, leading the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, and California Angels between 1983 and 1991 after retiring as a player in 1978.
