About Gary Matthews
The 1976 season was Matthews's last in San Francisco. He played all 156 games and hit .279. He had 20 home runs and 84 RBI. His next contract, with the Braves, paid $100,000 a year plus a $125,000 bonus and an offseason job with owner Ted Turner worth $50,000. Topps #133 pictures him with the Giants.
Gary Matthews was an outfielder who played 16 seasons, 1972 to 1987, for the San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners. A first-round pick of the Giants in 1968, he was the 1973 National League Rookie of the Year after hitting .300 with 12 home runs. He signed a five-year, $1,875,000 contract with Atlanta in November 1976, one of the early free-agent deals, and in 1979 he made his lone All-Star team with a .304 average, 27 home runs and 90 RBI. The Phillies acquired him for Bob Walk in March 1981, and he was the MVP of the 1983 NLCS, going 6-for-14 with three home runs and eight RBI against Los Angeles. Traded to the Cubs in March 1984, he scored 101 runs for their division winners and homered twice in Game One of the NLCS. He finished with 2,011 hits, 234 home runs and 978 RBI. He later coached for the Cubs, Blue Jays and Brewers and was a Phillies broadcast analyst from 2007 to 2013.
