The story on this card
Strikeouts are the category on 1976 Topps #203, one of the League Leaders cards numbered #191-205. The 1975 National League board reads Tom Seaver of the New York Mets with 243, John Montefusco of the San Francisco Giants with 215 and Andy Messersmith of the Los Angeles Dodgers with 213. Seaver reached his total in 280 1/3 innings of a 22-9 year that brought his third Cy Young Award. Montefusco struck out his 215 in 243 2/3 innings as the league's Rookie of the Year, winning 15 games. Messersmith worked 321 2/3 innings, pitching the season unsigned under the reserve clause, and arbitrator Peter Seitz ruled in his favor that December.
Tom Seaver won 311 games and three National League Cy Young Awards across 20 seasons. The Mets' right-hander helped win the 1969 World Series and entered the Hall of Fame in 1992. John Montefusco, the Count, won the 1975 National League Rookie of the Year award with the Giants, threw a no-hitter in 1976, and finished 90-83 with a 3.54 ERA over 13 seasons with San Francisco, Atlanta, San Diego and the Yankees. Andy Messersmith made four All-Star teams and won two Gold Gloves during a 12-season pitching career. His successful 1975 arbitration case with Dave McNally ended clubs' claims to unlimited annual contract renewals.
