About Dale Murray

Card #252 still shows him with the Expos, though after the 1976 season Murray and Woodie Fryman had been traded to the World Series champion Reds for Tony Perez and Will McEnaney. The pitching staff he joined finished 1977 with a 4.21 ERA, third highest in the National League.

Dale Murray was a right-handed reliever who pitched twelve major league seasons, from 1974 to 1985, for the Expos, Reds, Mets, Blue Jays, Yankees and Rangers. Montreal drafted him out of Blinn College in the eighteenth round in 1970, tried him as a starter at Triple-A Peninsula in 1973 (8-13, 4.26 ERA), and returned him to the bullpen. He reached the majors in 1974 and went 1-1 with a 1.03 ERA. Toronto signed him to a minor league contract in January 1981, and after he saved sixteen games at Syracuse he earned a September call-up. In 1982 he led the Blue Jays with eleven saves, then went to the Yankees in the trade that sent Fred McGriff to Toronto. The Yankees released him in April 1985 and he made one appearance for Texas. At the plate he went 5 for 65, and his one RBI was a two-out single on September 1, 1975 that beat the Phillies 6-5.
