1977 Topps #180 Dave Lopes

About Dave Lopes
A pulled rib-cage muscle kept Lopes out of the first six weeks of 1976 and a neck injury cost him two weeks in June, leaving him with 117 games. Card #4 is the stolen-base League Leaders issue shared with Bill North of the Athletics, and #180 is his own Dodgers card. In 1977 he hit .283 with 11 home runs and 47 steals, and late in the year became the club's fifth team captain, after Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, Maury Wills and Willie Davis.
Davey Lopes was a right-handed second baseman and leadoff man, the second-base piece of the Dodgers infield of Garvey, Lopes, Russell and Cey, which stayed together from 1973 through 1981 and won the 1981 World Series. Tommy Lasorda converted him from outfielder to second base in the minors, and he debuted at 27 on September 22, 1972. He led the National League in steals with 77 in 1975 and 63 in 1976, and that first year he stole 38 consecutive bases without being caught to pass Max Carey's record. He retired with 557 steals, 418 of them for Los Angeles. He was an All-Star from 1978 to 1981 and won the 1978 Gold Glove. Oakland, the Cubs and the Astros followed from 1982 to 1987. He later coached first base for several clubs, including the 1998 Padres and the 2008 Phillies, and managed Milwaukee from 2000 until he was fired 15 games into 2002, finishing 144-195. He died on April 8, 2026.
