1977 Topps #390 Dave Winfield

About Dave Winfield
Signs read "Keep Dave, Trade Buzzie" in 1977, when Winfield played out his option at a 10 percent pay cut during a standoff with general manager Buzzie Bavasi. With the sides $100,000 apart, the Padres paid that sum to his foundation, which spent it on 100,000 tickets at $1 apiece. In early July he signed a four-year, $1.4 million contract. At his first All-Star Game he doubled and drove in the winning runs with a single off Sparky Lyle in a 7-5 NL win. His 1977 card is #390.
Dave Winfield was a 6-foot-6 outfielder, later a designated hitter, who played 22 major league seasons for six clubs. He finished with 3,110 hits, 465 home runs and 1,833 RBI. A 12-time All-Star, he won seven Gold Gloves and six Silver Sluggers. He entered the Hall of Fame in 2001, his first year of eligibility, as the first Padre so honored.
A pitcher and basketball forward at the University of Minnesota, he was voted most valuable player of the 1973 College World Series and was drafted that year in baseball, basketball and football. San Diego took him fourth overall and sent him directly to the majors. In December 1980 George Steinbrenner signed him to a ten-year contract that made him the game's highest-paid player, and a public feud with the owner ran through his New York years. His .340 in 1984 finished .003 behind teammate Don Mattingly for the batting title. Steinbrenner's 1985 label for him, "Mr. May," stayed with him until the 1992 World Series. Traded to the Angels in 1990, he signed with Toronto and delivered the Series-winning double in the 11th inning of Game 6. With his hometown Twins he singled off Dennis Eckersley for his 3,000th hit. He was the first active athlete to establish a charitable foundation and received the Roberto Clemente Award.
