1977 Topps #9 Doug Rader

About Doug Rader
San Diego needed a veteran starting third baseman, and in 1976 Rader became its everyday man at the position. He appeared in 139 games and played third base in 137. He collected 121 hits in 471 at-bats and scored 45 runs. His 1977 Topps card is #9, with the Padres.
Doug Rader was a third baseman who built his reputation on defense. Signed by the Houston Astros as an undrafted free agent out of Bloomington, Illinois, he reached the majors in 1967 and became Houston's everyday third baseman the following year. Over an eleven-year career split between the Astros, San Diego Padres, and Toronto Blue Jays, he hit 155 home runs and drove in 722 runs. He won five consecutive Gold Glove Awards at third base from 1970 through 1974. Nicknamed "the Red Rooster" for the thick red hair under his cap, he later moved into coaching and managing, leading the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, and California Angels between 1983 and 1991 after retiring as a player in 1978.
