The story on this card
Card #5 in the 1977 Topps League Leaders subset (#1-8) is the 1976 wins board, with Randy Jones of the San Diego Padres and Jim Palmer of the Baltimore Orioles sharing the front. Both won 22 games that year. Palmer went 22-13 with a 2.51 ERA and led the American League in victories, while Jones went 22-14 with a 2.74 ERA over 315 1/3 innings. Each man took the Cy Young Award in his league.
Jim Palmer was Baltimore's ace right-hander, a three-time Cy Young winner and four-time Gold Glover who worked on three World Series champions, beat Sandy Koufax in Koufax's final appearance, and reached the Hall of Fame in 1990. Sinkerball left-hander Randy Jones won the 1976 NL Cy Young Award for the Padres after a 20-win 1975. A nerve injury ended his peak, and he finished 100-123 with a 3.42 ERA, a Padres Hall of Famer.
