The story on this card

Topps opened the 1977 set with eight League Leaders cards, and #6 is the strikeout board, pairing Nolan Ryan of the California Angels with Tom Seaver of the New York Mets. Ryan struck out 327 batters in 284 1/3 innings in 1976 and went 17-18, leading the American League in losses. Seaver fanned 235 in 271 innings and went 14-11 with a 2.59 ERA. The card lists Seaver with the Mets, though they traded him to the Cincinnati Reds on June 15, 1977, in the deal New York writers called the Midnight Massacre.

Nolan Ryan was the flame-throwing "Ryan Express," a Mets farmhand who became baseball's all-time strikeout king, setting career records for strikeouts (5,714) and no-hitters (seven) over 27 seasons with the Mets, Angels, Astros and Rangers. Tom Seaver won 311 games and three National League Cy Young Awards across 20 seasons. The Mets' right-hander helped win the 1969 World Series and entered the Hall of Fame in 1992.
