1977 Topps #153 Ron Jackson

About Ron Jackson
Manager Norm Sherry opened 1977 with Jackson and Dave Chalk competing at third base. Jackson played 106 games, including 43 at first and 30 at third, and drove in the winning run on both June 25 and June 26. During Bert Blyleven's September 22 no-hitter, Jackson reached on Bert Campaneris's error and remained California's only baserunner until a ninth-inning walk. His rookie card, #153, shows him with the Angels.
Ron Jackson played first and third base for the Angels, Twins, Tigers and Orioles between 1975 and 1984, then became a hitting coach. The Angels drafted him in the second round in 1971, 37th overall, from Wenonah High School in Birmingham, Alabama. Jackson later recalled receiving 200 football scholarship offers before choosing baseball. He debuted on September 12, 1975, and finished with a .259 average, 56 home runs and 342 RBIs over 10 seasons. His only postseason appearance came in the 1982 ALCS, when he had a hit in his lone at-bat for California. Nolan Ryan gave him the nickname Papa Jack after hearing that Jackson had become the father of a baby boy. After coaching in the Brewers, Dodgers and White Sox systems, Jackson was named Boston's hitting coach on December 27, 2002. He held the post when the 2004 Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 seasons. He later coached the Round Rock Express, Houston's top affiliate, from 2007 to 2009.
