About Mark Belanger

Belanger batted .270 with 27 stolen bases and 153 games at shortstop in 1976. He drew more than a million All-Star votes and made the American League team as a reserve. After the season he negotiated a $60,000 contract without an agent. His 1977 Topps card, #135, shows him with the Orioles.

Mark Belanger spent 17 seasons with Baltimore and one with the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning eight Gold Gloves at shortstop and a World Series championship with the 1970 Orioles. His tall, narrow frame earned him the nickname The Blade. Baltimore signed him out of Pittsfield High School in 1962 for $35,000, and he reached the majors as a pinch-runner on August 7, 1965. Across 18 seasons he collected 1,316 hits and batted .228. He served as the Orioles' player representative, took part in the 1981 strike negotiations and worked for the players' association after retiring. Baltimore inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 1983.
