1977 Topps #189 Rick Dempsey

About Rick Dempsey
His first full year in Baltimore was 1977, and all 91 of his games came at catcher. Dempsey hit .226 with three home runs and 34 RBIs. He, McGregor and Martinez, all acquired in the 1976 trade, formed a nucleus for the Orioles' contending teams. Card #189 shows him in Baltimore colors.
Rick Dempsey caught in the major leagues for 24 seasons, from a 1969 debut with the Minnesota Twins to a final game with the Baltimore Orioles in 1992. He was a defensive catcher, valued for handling pitchers, a strong arm and agility behind the plate, and he finished with a .233 average, 96 home runs and 1,093 hits. The Orioles used him as their starting catcher for ten and a half seasons after a June 1976 trade, and no one caught more games for the club. He batted .385 in the 1983 World Series and was named its Most Valuable Player, and he was a Dodgers backup on another World Series winner in 1988. His rain-delay pantomimes, ending in a belly slide on the tarpaulin, were a Baltimore trademark. The Orioles inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1997. He later managed in the minors and coached and broadcast for the Orioles.
