1977 Topps #85 Duane Kuiper

About Duane Kuiper
Kuiper played all 148 games at second in 1977, batting .277 with 169 hits. He tripled in the first inning on May 30 and scored on a Jim Norris squeeze bunt, the only run of Dennis Eckersley's no-hitter against the Angels. On August 29, on ABC's Monday Night Baseball, he hit the first home run of his career, off Chicago's Steve Stone, in his 1,382nd at-bat. The Cleveland media named him Indians Man of the Year. Topps numbered his 1977 Indians card #85.
Duane Kuiper was a left-handed-hitting second baseman who played twelve seasons, 1974 through 1985, eight with the Cleveland Indians and four with the San Francisco Giants, and then became the Giants' television voice. Drafted five times between 1968 and 1971 without signing, he went to Cleveland as a first-round pick in the January 1972 secondary draft and reached the majors in September 1974 after hitting .310 at Oklahoma City. Defense was his strength; manager Frank Robinson called him the best second baseman in the league and once said he stood up in the dugout to applaud plays Kuiper made. He served as Indians team captain. A knee injury in 1980 cost him almost the whole season. The Giants acquired him for pitcher Ed Whitson in November 1981, and in 1982, backing up Joe Morgan, he set a then-club record with 14 pinch hits. He retired in 1985 with a .271 average and one home run in 3,379 at-bats. He hosted a KNBR radio show from 1982, joined the Giants' broadcast booth in 1986, spent 1993 with the expansion Colorado Rockies and returned to San Francisco in 1994. Paired with Mike Krukow, he made the call on the final out of the 2010 World Series and on Matt Cain's 2012 perfect game, and had won seven Emmy Awards by 2014.
