1977 Topps #33 Wayne Garland

About Wayne Garland
Garland signed with Cleveland in November 1976, the first 10-year contract in major league history, worth a reported $2.3 million. He started all 38 of his games in 1977 and went 13-19 with a 3.60 ERA. He worked 282 2/3 innings and began to feel pain in his pitching arm that season. Card #33 shows him in an Indians uniform.
Wayne Garland was a right-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the majors, 1973 to 1981, with the Baltimore Orioles and the Cleveland Indians, finishing 55-66 with a 3.89 ERA. A Nashville native, he was drafted by the Pirates in 1968 and the Cardinals in 1969 without signing before the Orioles took him in the 1969 secondary draft. He won 20 games and lost seven for Baltimore in 1976, then became one of the first free agents of the Seitz era and signed with the Indians. He turned to the knuckleball late in his career to work around shoulder injuries and was released after the 1981 season. He later coached in the minors, including as pitching coach for the Nashville Sounds and in the Pirates organization.
