1977 Topps #30 Greg Luzinski

About Greg Luzinski
Luzinski's #30 carries the All-Star designation. The 1977 season brought career highs of a .309 average, 39 home runs and 130 RBIs, plus a second-place finish in MVP voting. He homered off Jim Palmer in the All-Star Game. In the NLCS, a ninth-inning misplay of Manny Mota's fly ball in Game 3 became known as Black Friday.
Greg Luzinski was a right-handed slugging left fielder for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1970 to 1980, then a designated hitter for the Chicago White Sox through 1984. He hit .276 with 307 home runs and 1,128 RBIs and was a National League All-Star every year from 1975 through 1978. The Bull, as he was known, reportedly picked up the nickname at Triple-A Eugene for his thick chest and productive bat. In the 1980 NLCS he belted a two-run homer in Game 1 and a pinch-hit double in Game 4, hits that helped carry Philadelphia to its first World Series title. With the White Sox he hit 32 home runs as a DH in 1983, a record at that time. Born in Chicago, he was drafted 11th overall in 1968 out of Notre Dame High School. He was inducted into the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Phillies Wall of Fame in 1998, and later opened Bull's Barbecue at Citizens Bank Park.
