1977 Topps #19 John D'Acquisto

About John D'Acquisto
Card #19 shows D'Acquisto in a Cardinals uniform. He spent time on the disabled list and pitched in three games for St. Louis before the Cardinals sent him and Pat Scanlon to San Diego for Butch Metzger on May 17. Between the two clubs he went 1-2 with a 6.54 ERA in 20 games.
John D'Acquisto was a right-hander from San Diego, drafted by the Giants in the first round in 1970 out of St. Augustine High School. He pitched ten major league seasons, 1973 to 1982, for the Giants, Cardinals, Padres, Expos, Angels and Athletics, finishing 34-51 with a 4.56 ERA and 15 saves. He debuted September 2, 1973, and won his first game with a complete game over the Padres on September 21, striking out 11. In 1974 he was named National League Rookie Pitcher of the Year. Elbow surgery cost him most of 1975. Traded to St. Louis in October 1976 and to San Diego in May 1977, he moved to the Padres bullpen in 1978 and saved 10 games with a 2.13 ERA, then returned to the rotation in 1979. Released by the Angels, he signed with Atlanta, asked for and received his release that July, and finished 1982 with Oakland. He pitched in the Senior Professional Baseball Association in 1989 and later became a registered investment advisor. In 1996 he was sentenced to five years and three months in prison for trying to pass off a forged $200 million certificate of deposit. In 1999 he received another four years and seven months, served concurrently, after pleading guilty to wire fraud and money laundering.
