1977 Topps #502 Randy Hundley

About Randy Hundley
Hundley had surgery on June 7, 1976 to remove a disc and fuse two vertebrae in his neck. Afterward he said, "If I don't play, I'd sure be interested in coaching." He played two games in 1977, going hitless in four at-bats, with his last on September 25, and the Cubs released him for the final time on October 12. He retired at 35. His 1977 Topps card is #502, and it lists him with the Cubs.
Randy Hundley caught for the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Minnesota Twins, and San Diego Padres across fourteen big-league seasons from 1964 to 1977. Signed by the Giants out of Virginia, he was traded to Chicago before the 1966 season and quickly became the Cubs' everyday catcher, setting durability records behind the plate while introducing a one-handed catching style that later catchers adopted. He won a Gold Glove in 1967 and earned an All-Star selection in 1969, the year Chicago held first place for months before fading late. Knee injuries in the early 1970s slowed him, and he finished his playing career with brief stops in Minnesota and San Diego before returning to the Cubs. He later managed in the minor leagues and founded baseball fantasy camps for adult fans.
