1977 Topps #383 Stan Bahnsen

About Stan Bahnsen
Stan Bahnsen spent 1976 with Oakland under Chuck Tanner, his former White Sox manager, and went 8-7 with a 3.34 ERA, making 14 starts. Card #383 in the 1977 Topps set lists him with the Athletics, but early in the 1977 season Oakland traded him to the Montreal Expos for first baseman Mike Jorgensen, and he made 22 starts for Montreal.
Stan Bahnsen pitched 16 major-league seasons for the Yankees, White Sox, Athletics, Expos, Angels and Phillies, winning the 1968 American League Rookie of the Year award with New York. The Yankees drafted the Nebraska right-hander in the fourth round in 1965 after he earned All-Big Eight and third-team All-America honors. Nebraska fans nicknamed him the "Bahnsen Burner." With Chicago, he worked in Chuck Tanner's three-man rotation. His later nickname, "Stanley Struggle," referred to his habit of pitching out of jams. He finished his major-league career in 1982 with California and Philadelphia, then pitched for Triple-A Portland in 1983. His major-league totals included 146 wins, 1,359 strikeouts and 20 saves. He entered the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
