About Steve Grilli
Grilli worked 30 games for the 1977 Tigers, two of them starts, and threw 72 2/3 innings. He went 1-2 with a 4.83 ERA and struck out 49 batters. Topps issued his 1977 card as #506, showing him with Detroit.
Steve Grilli was a right-handed reliever from Brooklyn who pitched in the majors for the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays from 1975 to 1979. He graduated from Gannon University and signed with the Tigers as an undrafted free agent in the middle of 1970. His debut came five years later, on September 19, 1975 against the Boston Red Sox at Tiger Stadium, where he threw three scoreless innings. He wore number 49 in Detroit. The Blue Jays bought him before the 1978 season, and he worked as a starter in some years and a closer in others in their system. His last big league appearance came on September 17, 1979 against Boston at Exhibition Stadium. In 1981 he pitched for Rochester and took the loss in the 33rd inning of the longest professional game ever played. He retired with a 4-3 record, a 4.51 ERA and three saves in 70 games. His son Jason later pitched for ten major league clubs.
