1977 Topps #398 Tom Burgmeier

About Tom Burgmeier
Tom Burgmeier went 8-1 with a 2.50 ERA for the 1976 Twins. He worked 115 1/3 innings out of the bullpen in 57 games. Writer Bob Fowler called him and his left-right bullpen partner Bill Campbell the Bicentennial Bullpen that October, and Campbell then left for Boston as a free agent. His 1977 Topps #398 pictures Burgmeier with Minnesota.
Tom Burgmeier pitched in 745 major league games over 17 seasons, all but three in relief. The left-hander signed with Houston for a $10,000 bonus in 1961. After the club released him in 1964, San Jose manager Rocky Bridges recommended him to the Angels. Burgmeier reached the majors with California in 1968 and later pitched for Kansas City, Minnesota, Boston and Oakland. He made the 1980 American League All-Star team and finished that season with 24 saves and a 2.00 ERA for the Red Sox. His career ended in 1984 with a 79-55 record, a 3.23 ERA and 102 saves. Burgmeier later worked as a Royals video coordinator, coached pitchers in their farm system and served as the major league club's bullpen coach. He also coached at Bowie, Burlington and Omaha.
