1978 Topps #149 Dale Murray

About Dale Murray
Murray is a Red on card #149, following a 1977 season of 61 games, a 7-2 record and a 4.94 ERA. With the rotation depleted, he made his only career start on July 28 against the Cubs, lasting a little over an inning and giving up six earned runs. A month into 1978 he went to the Mets for Ken Henderson.
Dale Murray was a right-handed reliever who pitched twelve major league seasons, from 1974 to 1985, for the Expos, Reds, Mets, Blue Jays, Yankees and Rangers. Montreal drafted him out of Blinn College in the eighteenth round in 1970, tried him as a starter at Triple-A Peninsula in 1973 (8-13, 4.26 ERA), and returned him to the bullpen. He reached the majors in 1974 and went 1-1 with a 1.03 ERA. Toronto signed him to a minor league contract in January 1981, and after he saved sixteen games at Syracuse he earned a September call-up. In 1982 he led the Blue Jays with eleven saves, then went to the Yankees in the trade that sent Fred McGriff to Toronto. The Yankees released him in April 1985 and he made one appearance for Texas. At the plate he went 5 for 65, and his one RBI was a two-out single on September 1, 1975 that beat the Phillies 6-5.
