1978 Topps #215 Darrell Evans

About Darrell Evans
Evans played 155 games at third base for the 1978 Giants, who led the division into August and finished 89-73, six games back in third place. He hit .381 with a .491 on-base percentage during a May run of 12 wins in 13 games. Ten clubs chose him in the free-agent draft, and he re-signed with San Francisco for $1.435 million over five years.
Darrell Evans played 21 seasons in the majors, 1969 through 1989, as a third baseman and first baseman for the Braves, Giants and Tigers. A left-handed hitter who drew walks and hit for power, he finished with 414 home runs, 1,354 RBI and a .248 average, and Bill James called him the most underrated player in baseball history. He led the majors in walks twice, was a two-time All-Star, and won the 1984 World Series with Detroit. In 1985, at 38, he led the majors with 40 home runs, and he became the first player to hit 40 in both leagues. He was the Giants' captain after Willie McCovey retired in 1980. Evans managed and coached in the minor and independent leagues from 1990 to 2010. His nickname was Howdy, for a perceived resemblance to the television puppet Howdy Doody.
