1978 Topps #194 Derrel Thomas

About Derrel Thomas
Thomas returned to San Diego in 1978 and played mostly in the outfield, 77 games there, with 40 at second base. He hit .227 with three home runs in 128 games. Padres manager Roger Craig described him as a showman-type player who played hard and would take the villain role if it got him attention. Card #194 lists him with the Giants.
Derrel Thomas was a switch-hitting infielder-outfielder who played 15 seasons, 1971 to 1985, for Houston, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Montreal, California and Philadelphia. He hit .249 with 43 home runs in 1,597 games. He played every position except pitcher at least once, starting as a second baseman and shortstop and spending most of his Dodgers years in the outfield. A Los Angeles native out of Dorsey High School, he was the first overall pick of the January 1969 draft, taken by the Astros. He wore #30 in honor of his idol, Maury Wills. He was a member of the Dodgers team that won the 1981 World Series. After playing he was the first manager of the Boise Hawks in 1987, coached high school ball in Los Angeles, and later represented the Dodgers through their Legend Bureau.
