About Don Carrithers

Card #113 shows Carrithers in a Twins uniform. In 1977 he went 0-1 with a 6.91 ERA and 3 strikeouts in seven games, and his big-league career ended at 28. In 1978 he went back to the Phoenix Giants, the Giants' top farm club, where he had pitched from 1969 to 1971.

Don Carrithers was a right-handed pitcher who worked in the majors from 1970 to 1977 for the San Francisco Giants, Montreal Expos and Minnesota Twins. The Giants took him in the third round of the 1967 draft out of Lynwood High School in California, and he debuted at 20. He split his time between starting and relief, and injuries limited him to no more than 25 appearances in each season from 1971 through 1973. San Francisco traded him to Montreal for catcher John Boccabella just before 1974, and he did his best work there, going 5-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 1974 and 5-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 1975. In 1976 he threw 140 1/3 innings, a career high. The Expos sold him to Minnesota in spring 1977, and he finished 28-32 with a 4.45 ERA in 165 games.
