1978 Topps #664 Fred Stanley

About Fred Stanley
The 1977 Yankees beat Kansas City 3-2 in the ALCS and then the Dodgers 4-2 for the title, with Stanley in a reduced role. He played 48 games, 42 of them at shortstop. He had 12 hits in 46 at-bats with 1 home run. Topps issued him as #664 with the Yankees in 1978.
Fred Stanley was a shortstop who played 14 major league seasons, from 1969 to 1982, for the Seattle Pilots, Milwaukee Brewers, Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres, New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics. Born in Farnhamville, Iowa, he spent 1973 to 1980 with the Yankees, where he backed up Bucky Dent in the late 1970s and earned World Series rings in 1977 and 1978, both against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Phil Rizzuto, who did color analysis on Yankees broadcasts in those years, counted him a favorite. On September 8, 1973, Stanley hit the last grand slam at the original Yankee Stadium. He batted .216 with 10 home runs in 816 games, and he was the last active major leaguer who had played for the Pilots. In the Giants organization after his playing days, he managed in the minors from 2000 to 2004, won the 2001 Northwest League title with Salem-Keizer, and became San Francisco's director of player development in October 2007.
