1978 Topps #591 George Zeber

About George Zeber
A .323 average in 25 games in 1977 preceded Zeber's Yankees rookie card, 1978 Topps #591. His first major-league home run came off Dave Hamilton at Chicago on June 5, when New York hit 6 home runs in an 8-6 victory over the White Sox.
George Zeber was a switch-hitting Yankees infielder who backed up Willie Randolph. New York drafted him out of California's Loara High School in the fifth round in 1968. Army service interrupted his minor-league career, including 5 months in Vietnam in 1971. He resumed playing with Double-A West Haven under Bobby Cox in 1972, then underwent surgery on his right knee the next year. Zeber reached the majors in 1977 after winning the Yankees' James P. Dawson Award as their top spring-training rookie. He pinch hit in Games 2 and 5 of that year's World Series against the Dodgers. His major-league career ended in 1978 after 28 games.
