About Pete Mackanin

Mackanin played 1978 for Philadelphia, appearing in five games with two hits in eight at-bats and one RBI. He played one game at first base and one at third base. Card #399 in the 1978 Topps set still lists him with the Expos.

Pete Mackanin was a right-handed middle infielder who played nine seasons in the majors, from 1973 to 1981, for the Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins. He hit .226 with 30 home runs and 141 RBI in 548 games, mostly at second base and shortstop. The Washington Senators drafted him in 1969, and the franchise became the Rangers before his debut. Texas traded him with Don Stanhouse to Montreal for Willie Davis on December 5, 1974. His best year at the plate was 1975, when he hit 12 home runs and drove in 44 runs for the Expos. He also played winter ball in Venezuela and later managed Aguilas del Zulia to the 1989 Caribbean Series title. After his playing days he became a long-time coach and manager: Pittsburgh's interim manager in 2005, Cincinnati's in 2007, then Philadelphia's bench coach, third base coach and, from June 2015 through 2017, its manager.
