1978 Topps #414 Darold Knowles

About Darold Knowles
Texas sold Knowles's contract to Montreal after the 1977 season, reuniting him with former Oakland manager Dick Williams. He pitched 60 games for the Expos in 1978, going 3-3 with a 2.38 ERA. He saved six games and worked 72 innings. His Montreal card is #414. After the season he signed a two-year contract with St. Louis.
Darold Knowles pitched sixteen major-league seasons for seven franchises, making 765 appearances and recording 143 saves with a 3.12 ERA. The left-hander reached 71 appearances and 27 saves for Washington in 1970. With Oakland he became the first pitcher to appear in all seven games of a World Series, saving Games 1 and 7 against the Mets in 1973. He finished that Series with 6 1/3 innings and no earned runs, retiring Wayne Garrett for the final out. After his playing career, Knowles coached pitchers in the Cardinals, Phillies, Pirates and Blue Jays organizations, including eight years as a roving instructor for St. Louis. He was inducted into the Florida State League Hall of Fame and, in 2012, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
