1978 Topps #371 Ray Burris

About Ray Burris
Burris started Opening Day again in 1977 and lost 5-3 to Tom Seaver. He hit his only career home run on May 20, off Buzz Capra in Atlanta, but allowed a league-high 29 himself. He finished 14-16 with a 4.72 ERA in a career-high 39 starts. His Cubs card that year is #371.
Ray Burris was a 6-foot-5 right-handed sinker-slider pitcher who spent 15 seasons in the majors, from 1973 to 1987, with seven clubs, and won 108 games. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 17th round in 1972 out of Southwestern Oklahoma State, where he set an NAIA strikeout record. After stops with the Yankees and Mets he signed with Montreal, and in the 1981 NLCS he threw a complete-game shutout of the Dodgers in game 2 and went eight innings of a 1-1 deciding game 5. He won 13 games for Oakland in 1984, was traded to Milwaukee for Don Sutton, and pitched his last game in 1987. He was born in Idabel, Oklahoma, to sharecropping parents. After his playing days he served as Milwaukee's pitching coach in 1990 and 1991 and held coaching posts with the Rangers, Cardinals, Tigers and Phillies organizations.
