Roy Smalley was a switch-hitting shortstop who played 13 big-league seasons, 1975 to 1987, for the Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. The son of a major-league shortstop and a nephew of longtime manager Gene Mauch, he won College World Series titles at USC in 1972 and 1973 and was the first overall pick of the January 1974 draft, taken by Texas. He manned shortstop for Minnesota from 1976 until 1982, when the Twins sent him to the Yankees. His best season was 1979, when he set career highs in runs, home runs and RBI. He returned to the Twins in 1985 and appeared in the 1987 World Series, which Minnesota won over St. Louis. His career line was .257 with 163 home runs and 694 RBI in 1,653 games. He later worked as a Twins television analyst and was inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007 and the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013.
