1979 Topps #594 Bob Shirley

About Bob Shirley
Moved from San Diego's rotation to the bullpen in July 1978, Shirley made one more start that season. He finished with 50 appearances, 20 starts and 5 saves. His 1979 Topps card, #594, again lists him with the Padres; in 1979 he pitched 205 innings with a 3.38 ERA.
Bob Shirley pitched left-handed as both a starter and reliever for San Diego, St. Louis, Cincinnati, the Yankees and Kansas City. He attended the University of Oklahoma after the Dodgers drafted him out of Putnam City High School in 1972. San Diego selected him in the January 1976 draft's secondary phase. His first professional season took him from Double-A Amarillo to Triple-A Hawaii. He later moved to St. Louis in the 11-player trade that also sent Rollie Fingers, Gene Tenace and Bob Geren from San Diego to the Cardinals. Across 11 major league seasons, Shirley pitched 1,432 innings in 434 games. He earned 67 wins and 18 saves.
