1979 Topps #593 Rick Dempsey

About Rick Dempsey
Dempsey caught 124 games for the 1979 Orioles, hitting .239 with six home runs and 41 RBIs. Baltimore beat California in the ALCS, where he went 4-for-10, then took three of the first four World Series games from Pittsburgh before losing in seven. The loss was one of the biggest disappointments of his playing career. His 1979 Topps card, #593, shows him with the Orioles.
Rick Dempsey caught in the major leagues for 24 seasons, from a 1969 debut with the Minnesota Twins to a final game with the Baltimore Orioles in 1992. He was a defensive catcher, valued for handling pitchers, a strong arm and agility behind the plate, and he finished with a .233 average, 96 home runs and 1,093 hits. The Orioles used him as their starting catcher for ten and a half seasons after a June 1976 trade, and no one caught more games for the club. He batted .385 in the 1983 World Series and was named its Most Valuable Player, and he was a Dodgers backup on another World Series winner in 1988. His rain-delay pantomimes, ending in a belly slide on the tarpaulin, were a Baltimore trademark. The Orioles inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1997. He later managed in the minors and coached and broadcast for the Orioles.
