About Mike Krukow

Krukow batted .314 for the Cubs in 1979, with 16 hits in 51 at-bats. He also hit a home run and drove in 8. On the mound he went 9-9 with a 4.21 ERA and started all 28 of his appearances. He struck out 119 in 164 2/3 innings. His 1979 Topps card, #592, carried the Cubs.

Mike Krukow was a right-handed starting pitcher who spent 14 seasons in the majors with the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants, finishing 124-117 with a 3.90 ERA. He played catcher at San Gabriel High School, posted a 1.94 career ERA as a pitcher at Cal Poly, and was an eighth-round pick of the Cubs in 1973. Chicago traded him to the Phillies in December 1981 for Keith Moreland, Dickie Noles and Dan Larson, and in December 1982 Philadelphia sent him to San Francisco with Mark Davis and C.L. Penigar for Joe Morgan and Al Holland. His best season was 1986 with the Giants: a 20-9 record, a 3.05 ERA, an All-Star selection and third place in the NL Cy Young Award voting behind Mike Scott and Fernando Valenzuela. He won the Willie Mac Award in 1985 and 1986, and in Game 4 of the 1987 NLCS he beat the Cardinals with a complete game. Shoulder trouble, including a torn rotator cuff, ended his 1989 season and led to his retirement in March 1990. He then became a Giants broadcaster, forming the "Kruk and Kuip" duo with former teammate Duane Kuiper.
