1979 Topps #398 Ivan DeJesus

About Ivan DeJesus
DeJesus had 180 hits and 5 home runs in 1979, batting .283 for the Cubs. Broadcaster Tony Kubek said he had made himself a better hitter after scaring the Dodgers with his strikeouts. He is listed with the Cubs on his #398 card in the 1979 Topps set.
Ivan DeJesus was a Puerto Rican shortstop who played 15 major league seasons, from 1974 to 1988, for the Dodgers, Cubs, Phillies, Cardinals, Yankees, Giants and Tigers. Born in Santurce, he signed with Los Angeles at 16 and was traded to the Cubs with Bill Buckner for Rick Monday in January 1977. He became an immediate starter in Chicago, set a franchise record for shortstops with 595 assists in 1977, formed a double-play pair with Manny Trillo and led the Cubs in steals in four of his five seasons there. In January 1982 he went to Philadelphia in the Larry Bowa and Ryne Sandberg trade, and in 1983 he played in the NLCS and World Series with the Phillies. He retired with a .254 average and 194 stolen bases in 1,371 games, then managed in the minors and served as a Cubs base coach in 2010 and 2011.
