About Steve Ontiveros

The 1978 season behind card #299 was shortened to 82 games for Ontiveros, who hit .243 in 276 at-bats for the Cubs. He played 77 of those games at third base and drove in 22 runs. In 1979 he played 152 games and hit .285 with 57 RBI.

Steve Ontiveros was a switch-hitting third baseman who played in the majors from 1973 to 1980, first for the San Francisco Giants (1973-1976) and then for the Chicago Cubs (1977-1980). He won The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year award in 1973 and reached the Giants late that season. On February 11, 1977, he went to Chicago with Bobby Murcer and Andy Muhlstock in the trade that sent Bill Madlock and Rob Sperring to San Francisco. In eight major league seasons he hit .274 with 24 home runs and 224 RBI in 732 games. After losing the third base job to Lenny Randle in 1980, he was sold to the Seibu Lions of Japan, and he hit .312 with 82 home runs and 390 RBI there from 1980 to 1985.
