1979 Topps #240 Rick Reuschel

About Rick Reuschel
Reuschel went 7-0 with a 1.63 ERA in August 1979, which put him at 16-7 and on pace for a second 20-win year. He went 2-5 with a 5.02 ERA in September and finished 18-12 as the Cubs fell to fifth. His 3.62 ERA came over 239 innings in 36 starts. His 1979 Topps card, #240, has him with Chicago.
Rick Reuschel was a big right-handed sinkerballer who won 214 games over 19 seasons, most of them for poor Chicago Cubs teams. A third-round pick out of Western Illinois in 1970, he reached the majors on June 19, 1972, and pitched for the Cubs from 1972 to 1981, then for the Yankees, the Cubs again in 1983 and 1984, the Pirates and the Giants. He won 20 games in 1977, was an All-Star that year, in 1987 and in 1989, and won Gold Gloves in 1985 and 1987. He lost all of 1982 to two rotator cuff surgeries and won 14 games with a 2.27 ERA for Pittsburgh in 1985, taking Comeback Player honors. Later, he won 17 games for the 1989 National League champion Giants. He finished with a 3.37 ERA, 2,015 strikeouts and 102 complete games. Known as Big Daddy, because his speed belied his heavy frame, he also had a brother, Paul, who pitched for the Cubs.
