About Donnie Moore
Card #17 carries Moore's 1978 season with the Cubs, when he went 9-7 in 71 games with one start. He pitched 103 innings and hit .267 in 15 at-bats. In 1979, the season the card was issued for, he went 1-4 with a 5.18 ERA in 39 games, and by 1980 he was with St. Louis.
Donnie Moore was a right-handed reliever who pitched 13 major league seasons between 1975 and 1988 for the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves and California Angels. Born in Lubbock, Texas, and a cousin of Hubie Brooks, he attended Paris Junior College and Ranger College before the Cubs took him in the first round of the January secondary phase of the 1973 draft. His best years came as a closer, with 16 saves for Atlanta in 1984 and then 31 saves and a 1.92 ERA for the Angels in 1985, when he made the American League All-Star team after developing a splitter. In Game 5 of the 1986 ALCS, Dave Henderson homered off him with the Angels one strike from the pennant, and Boston won the series. Shoulder trouble followed, the Angels released him after 1988, and he died on July 18, 1989, at age 35. He finished 43-40 with a 3.67 ERA and 89 saves.
