1979 Topps #346 Bill Buckner

About Bill Buckner
On May 17, 1979, Buckner went 4-for-7 with a grand slam off Tug McGraw and a career-high seven RBI in the Cubs' 23-22 loss to the Phillies at Wrigley Field. He finished the year at .284 with 14 home runs and 66 RBI, and departing manager Herman Franks called him nuts. His card is #346.
Bill Buckner was a left-handed hitter who played 22 major league seasons, from 1969 to 1990. He began as an outfielder with the Los Angeles Dodgers and then played mostly first base for the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, California Angels and Kansas City Royals. A contact hitter who rarely struck out, he won the 1980 National League batting title at .324, led the league in doubles in 1981 and 1983, and made the 1981 All-Star team. He finished with 2,715 hits, 498 doubles and a .289 average. He set a record for first basemen with 184 assists in 1985. A severe ankle injury in 1975 cost him his speed and left him dependent on elaborate pregame treatment for the rest of his career. In Game 6 of the 1986 World Series a ground ball rolled through his legs for an error, which brought years of abuse from Boston fans before they welcomed him back after the Red Sox won in 2004. He died in 2019.
