About Mike Hargrove

By the time the 1979 set came out Hargrove had left Texas, and card #591 still shows him with the Rangers. In San Diego he hit .192 and lost his job; the Padres sent him to Cleveland on June 14 for Paul Dade. He opened up his stance on the advice of coaches Dave Duncan and Joe Nossek and hit .353 from July 6 on, finishing the year at .289.

Mike Hargrove was a left-handed first baseman who hit .290 with 80 home runs and 686 RBI over 12 seasons, the first five with the Texas Rangers and the last seven with Cleveland, and later a manager for 16 years. A 25th-round pick in 1972 out of semipro ball in Liberal, Kansas, he made the Rangers in 1974 and won American League Rookie of the Year with a .323 average, the first Ranger so honored. He made the 1975 All-Star team. His batter's-box routine of adjusting helmet, glove and sleeves between pitches earned him the nickname the Human Rain Delay. After a 1979 that began in San Diego, he stayed in the Cleveland organization for two decades as a player, coach and manager. As Indians manager from 1991 he won five straight AL Central titles from 1995 to 1999 and pennants in 1995 and 1997, then managed Baltimore (2000-2003) and Seattle (2005-2007) for a career record of 1,188-1,173.
